Steampunk World’s Fair 2013

Last weekend, there were thousands of Steampunks at the Radisson and Embassy Suites hotels in Piscataway, New Jersey. Steampunk, a strange blend of futuristic technology and the anachronistic society of the Victorian era, takes its primary influences from 19th century science fiction writers, such as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne; the Victorian-era Great Britain; and the American West. The Steampunk World’s Fair occurs each year in New Jersey, and is considered to be the largest and most whimsical Steampunk event in the world. The weekend festival kicked off Friday, May 17, and featured attendees dressed in costume, vendors, presenters, musical performers and other entertainers.

Hubris’ members have names such as Hobbit, Sock Monkey, and Cookie Monster. In case you missed them at the Steampunk World’s Fair, Hubris performs throughout the year at events and festivals along the East Coast.

The World of Wyck is unique mix of classic sideshow routines and humor. Wyck performed his stunts with comedic effect that makes him an absolutely amazing showman. There was standing room only for the White Elephant Burlesque Show long before the performance started. One member of the White Elephant Burlesque Society, of particular note was Lilith Lore. Lore is a storyteller, burlesque dancer and much, much more. Her wickedly salacious retelling of classic fairy tales could make you rethink other believes that you have held since childhood.

Frenchy And The Punk Steampunk World’s Fair 2013

The musical entertainment at the Steampunk World’s Fair featured “Frenchy And The Punk”, the world’s leading Steampunk musicians. “Frenchy”, also known as Samantha Stephenson, is a graceful, sultry powerful French-born singer. Scott Helland is “The Punk”, an electrifying punk rock guitarist from the golden days of the hardcore scene. Formed in 2005, Frenchy and The Punk created a sound that was an energetic hybrid of European Folk music, Punk attitude, World Beat eclecticism and traveling player theatricality.

Samantha Stephenson, the singer and primary lyricist of the musical group, has had a roller coaster life journey, going from artist to MBA graduate to full-time performing artist. She studied art at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League in New York and dance at the Royal School of Dance in England. She was formally trained in piano and voice since her teen years. Stephenson has lived in France, Brazil, England, Africa and the United States.

Scott Helland’s music is deeply rooted in hardcore scene of the 1980s. Helland was co-founder and bassist of the legendary hardcore punk band, Deep Wound, whose members included future Dinosaur Jr. band members Lou Barlow and J. Mascis. Helland’s follow-up band, Outpatients, shared the stage with bands such as Black Flag, CroMags, Husker Du, GBH, and Agnostic Front.

Helland’s creative guitar techniques perfectly compliment the spirit and playfulness of Stephenson’s lyrics. In their eight year collaboration, the two have blended their vast collective musical and life experiences into a unique and theatrical style and sound. They are now one of the leading acts of the cabaret and steampunk movements. Conjoined Siamese Twins – A Modern Medical Wonder

Siamese Twins –  A Modern-day Case

Krista Hogan and Tatiana Hogan were born on October 25, 2006. The Siamese twin girls are joined at the head, a condition called craniopagus conjoined twins. The girls are unusual in that they also share a connection between their brains. They were born in Vancouver, British Columbia and live with their mother and three other siblings in a small apartment next to their grandmother in nearby Vernon, British Columbia. The girls are the only unseparated craniopagus twins currently living in Canada.

The interconnected nervous systems of these girls makes them unique, even among craniopagus twins. Their brains are connected through a neural bridge between their thalami. The thalamus is the sensory processing hub of the brain. This interconnection allows each girl to see out of any of their four collective eyes. It also allows one twin to feel it when the other twin is tickled. It is also believed that they can share thoughts, although this has not been objectively verified.

When one twin uses the eyes of the other to see there is an internal shift that takes place suggesting that a decision has to be made to use this ability. Even more interesting is that the twins have different tastes in food. Tatiana hates ketchup, while Krista loves it. Krista dislikes the breading on her chicken McNuggets and scrapes it off. Tatiana, on the other hand likes the breading on her chicken McNuggets. It is believed that somehow the twins can selectively block out certain shared sensory input. What this may mean to our understanding of the ability of the brain to change and adapt is still not know, but it promises to be very revealing. By studying these two little girls, as they develop, we should gain a greater understanding of the development of personality, empathy and consciousness.

Historically, conjoined twins elicit public fascination for their physical difference and rarity. They were often depicted as nonhuman, examples of freaks and nature gone horribly wrong, destined only for lives in circus sideshows. As the public’s attitude toward handicapped people changed and as medical techniques improved during the 20th century, separation of conjoined twins became a realistic solution for many.

Doug Cochrane, a neurosurgeon at B.C. Children’s Hospital and a member of the medical team at the twin’s birth recalls, “At the time the immediate reaction to conjoined twins was, ‘gee whiz’ you’ve got to get them separated. You’ve got to make them normal. They’ve got to fit our social context of what normality is.” However, “It’s not my role to create injury for the sake of social conformity.” Added Dr. Cochrane. He determined that it was not possible to separate the twins without creating neurological injury that would be more devastating than their existing disability. Dr. Cochrane concluded “They give us the opportunity to appreciate the differences and similarities we all share; we are all human, they are very much human. The fact that they are different just makes them something to be cherished, and not something that goes into the circus.”

Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Boy - Fedor Jeftichew

Fedor Jeftichew – Jo Jo the Dog Faced Boy

Fedor was born in Russia in 1868 and like his father, Adrien Konstantinov Jeftichew, the boy had generalized hypertrichosis. This condition, also know as “werewolf syndrome”, results in thick hair covering all of the body except the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Fedor was exhibited initially in France with his father, also know as “The Siberian Dog Man”, when Fedor was just five years old.

After his father drank himself to death, Fedor was taken to England where he was exhibited by Charles Reynolds. In 1884 P.T. Barnum heard of the hairy boy and brought the sixteen year old to the United States to appear in his Barnum and London Circus.

To make the his new exhibit more appealing to the public, Barnum renamed Fedor, “Jo Jo The Dog faced Boy” and created an elaborate story regarding the boy’s background. According to the story, a hunter in Kostroma tracked a wild man and his child to a nearby cave where the two had been living as savages. The hunter and some village men later cornered the savages in the cave and several of the village men were killed, as the father fiercely defended himself and his offspring. In the end, however, both savages were captured. While the young wild boy accepted his domestication and with the help of scientists who taught the boy to wear clothes and speak. The father so wild that he could not be civilized had to be confined to a cage, where he soon died.

Fedor toured with Barnum’s circus until around the turn of the century. He then toured the world until his death on January 21, 1904 while on exhibit in Greece.
